Autumn Rhythm- Jackson Pollock

Autumn Rhythm like many of Jackson Pollock's paintings that he created during his "drip period" may be interpreted as self portraits, for the paintings' strokes and marks are representations of the artist. The end result is a compilation of instances of the artist: a self portrait. In discussing his work, Pollock once mentioned, "every good painter paints what he is." Much of the paintings created during the Abstract Expressionist period follow this theme of "being the painting," creating self portraits.

I-box- Robert Morris

Robert Morris' I-box, a sculpture created in reaction to the Abstract Expressionists, is another interpretation of a self portrait, for while rebuking the movement in its literal rendition of "being the art," its message creates a self portrait. The tongue-in-cheek humor creates an unconventional image of the artist himself.
